Hey, so i'm pretty new to this, and I'm liking it a lot! I even like how there's a community here. I've been thinking of biting the bullet and getting the subscription because I really want to be fluent. But I'm not sure if it's worth it and I was hoping to hear from anyone who has advice if I should do that or keep up with the free version. Please lemme know what you guys think!

I paid the $50 for the year back in September because it felt like the advertisements were as long as each lesson. I was very interested in this app and watching advertisements after each lesson was making me not want to continue this app. I’ve been wanting to learn ASL for many years and finally I was putting a real effort into learning. I took a couple classes at the community college, loved it, but wanted to continue learning at my pace on my schedule. This app in my opinion is very good to start learning ASL. Because of my previous learnings and my determination to learn as much as I could from this app I finished everything in a few months. Until they add more levels, spelling challenges or games I am at the point where I just do the 6 levels per day to refresh and max out the exp points. Money well spent in my opinion because I hate advertisements. Looking back if I’d realized I would finish the app in a few months I would have just paid monthly. I do not plan on renewing my subscription unless they add a lot of lessions before my subscription is up. at that point, I’ll still do 6 lessons per day but I can watch 6 advertisements. My advise to you is evaluate your distaste with advertisements, how fast you think you’ll get to the end of lvl 17, and can you fit the subscription into you budget. I’ve seen other apps charge a lot more and feel this one has a lot to offer for the price. I like this community also. Good luck on you ASL journey.

Btw I believe to be fluent you have to interact with other signers. This app alone will not make you fluent but it will give you the foundation to interact with others who sign. I say that because I’m 53 still learning English. English develops all the time and has slang based of culture, geographical location, and generation. I’ve discovered ASL is the same way. The cool thing is every person I have tried to communicate with from the deaf community, CODA’s or signers who’ve learned for their person/professional development, they have all been more than willing to slow down their signing to accommodate my lack of proficiency compared to theirs, and they also seems happy that I was trying to learn ASL. Lastly I suggest before you attempt to make you first interaction, learn how to sign your reason for learning ASL. You will be asked. It’s a good thing and part of the connection.

thank you so much for this advice!! I've been noticing more deaf people in the community where I work at and I started to feel awkward pulling my phone out and typing, and then only being able to sign "thank you" after the interaction. I'm absolutely going to think about doing the monthly subscription, and hopefully make some friends within the community to help sign some more 😊 thank you for the suggestions again!

definitely bite the billet and pay for the app. I’ve paid for two years. I appreciate the developers and like the lessons. I agree that this alone will not make you fluent- I take an in person class at the county library from a deaf literacy council. see if there is one in your area. the class is only once a week and I use the app daily. when I done understand something in the app I can ask the teacher. she also keeps the class connected to the deaf community with invitations to social events. I’m far from fluent but am piecing together an understanding of the language.

I don't mind the ads that much, but I think it depends on how good you are at ASL and how you're using the app

live stream sign feature

I’ve been learning ASL on this app for a long time now, and it’s been really helpful. But sometimes when I have the seldom chance to sign with real people, I get a little lost. I think it would be great if the app had a live video feature where learners can sign with actual people in real time. It would make learning more interactive, fun, and easier to understand especially for people like me who love ASL but don’t have anyone to practice signing with.

Can you guys please make a free game even like a endless quiz game. I really need a review because I lock in so hard and then I have trouble remembering all the words

Add a flag to report

I wish there was a flag to report typos or something that needs to be reviewed within each lesson. I just finished watching a video that signed that she liked chicken noodle soup, but there's a sign after "chicken" that looks like "sushi." I found it a weird soup, but it was an option, so I chose it. It was wrong. I also saw "don't" spelled as "do'nt" in another lesson. I feel bad that I can't flag things to help improve the app.
