What led you to start learning ASL? Do you have a friend or family member who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing you with the communicate with? Or have you just always been curious? Please comment your reason or story below!

When I was young, my family was close friends with a Deaf family. I had some experience in a Deaf household, however I didn't learn more than the alphabet as the two daughters were both hearing. Ever since, I have wanted to learn.

Now, in my mid-twenties, I started working in the school system. There is a little boy who is Deaf that I work with. His family does not sign, and he currently has no access to any language besides an AAC device that he doesn't understand or want. His family will not allow the school to send him to a specialized school for him to learn ASL. What little I have picked up from Deaf content creators and apps, I began trying to sign with him. Basics like socks and shoes, or time to go eat or go outside. He has responded well and everything is no longer a fight. He has also began communicating with me. Over the holiday break I have been trying to learn as much as I can to help him when we return.

I want to be clear. The state just started sending someone in once a month for an hour to try to teach him ASL, but she's missed more sessions so far than she's made. I have zero intentions of trying to teach him ASL as I am not qualified. I am only hoping to communicate with him in some way to help him until he finally is able to learn in the future.

I am looking forward to where 2026 takes me. I am looking into taking courses to become fluent. If anyone has any recommendations on that, I would love them. Please leave your story below, I'd love to read it.

Hello Andrea my name is Yonne. This is the beginning of my 4th year of studying ASL. I was genuinely touched by your story! I have a very good friend who has little hearing in one ear and I'm helping him to Learn ASL 😊. I began to get interested in learning when I was unable to learn Spanish 😂 I had no idea how I would use it. I didn't know anyone who was deaf. As the LORD would have it I joined a drama club (I'm retired) 😉 When the director found out I could sign she asked me to what I call sign dance to Love in need of Love by Stevie Wonder. well it seemed to go very well and I've been asked to sign dance in another up coming show ☺️ So it seems that we both are learning ASL with the hope of touching and helping others . All the very best to the little one your hoping ✨️ 🙏 to help

Yvonne thank you for commenting! That's very cool about your sign dancing! Signing though song was my first experience with ASL in Sunday School when I was little. Our teacher taught us many songs including 'If I Can Only Imagine'. It's crazy to me the amount of people who have no idea what Sign Language is. It is so nice to meet you! Thank you for your kind words!

Hi, Andrea! It’s sad but touching to hear your story. I’m the founding treasurer of my university’s ASL club, and I’ve heard countless stories just like that from our members or members of our community. I’m learning ASL as a way to connect, much like you. This app has been a great way to help me practice my terminology outside of club hours or when I’m unable to interact with my Deaf friends, like over winter break, and I include the QR code to this app at the end of every meeting. Keep doing what you’re doing, I believe in you, and I encourage you to keep learning and doing research on language deprivation and accessibility. He sounds like a bright kid, and it’s terrible to think that he’s being treated wrong.

Thank you Kennedy! I look forward to being a part of something similar to you. I'm so thankful to have access to this app and other tools. Also, he is a sweetheart! My first unprompted thank you from him, I about cried. The first time he was able to understand where we were transitioning to without a fight/meltdown, I squealed and jumped up and down like a little kid. It's so rewarding and he is so so deserving. Thank you for sharing!!

I have a stutter and some auditory processing issues. Learning new spoken languages has always been near impossible for me, but I also care about making the spaces I'm in as accessible as possible to a wide variety of people. Thank goodness not all languages require speaking! I'm here brushing up on my high school ASL and hoping I get the chance to use it meaningfully IRL.

Jess that is wonderful! You absolutely will help people. Even if it isn't with ASL but with the confidence and knowledge that you have. People need to learn patience. You are going to help so many people. Thank you for commenting your story!

I totally relate to this. I have a stutter as well and I love how sign language communicates without using your voice and I think it’s such a beautiful language 🤟

My family history indicated that I will be deaf, probably in the next decade or less. So, I guess I'm preparing. zmore importantly, its to support any currently deaf folks/children I may happen to meet in life. Your story us touching and sad.

I have F.N.D so my functions don’t always work as they should so sometimes I go mute and before ASL I had no way of communicating with people although most people still have no clue what I am saying because I am signing 😢but I can say some things to some people

Mikaela it's wonderful that you found ASL. Someday you'll be able to give someone a voice they wouldn't have because of your experience just as ASL has done for you. Thank you for sharing!

I am neurodivergent and sometimes find words hard to say or even think in English. My voice also falters a lot and since discovering ASL existed, I've preferred to sign instead of talk (even if my family can't understand me lol). I love it so much that I am majoring in ASL Interpreting, but I am still very much a beginner right now

Makaiah, the amount of people you will be able to help as an interpreter is so humbling. I hope you continue to pursue your journey with the best outcome for you and the people you hope to help!

hey! the reason I started learning sign was because I thought I was losing my hearing through middle and high school. I ended up learning later that this is partially correct and I do have a slight issue in both my ears that may get worse but it’s hard to tell now. I have loved my time learning asl and the people I have met because of it. even if I don’t end up needing it, I have grown to really love signing and I want to keep this with me as I continue to grow :)

hello everyone I hope everyone is doing well!! I started learning ASL because my grandma has a deaf friend ( who gave me my sign name which I love)and my grandma kinda showed me a few signs to get me started and even tho I haven't met her friend in person yet my grandma tells me lots of stories about her and she also tells her friend about me. so I learning ASL because me and my grandma does it together and it makes us happy and brings us closer and to talk to deaf people like my grandma's friend and because sometimes I find it hard to find my words in English and ASL helps me with that and ASL is just a beautiful language oh and because I couldn't learn Spanish lol!! sorry this is so long but thx for reading!!😊😆
