We have a Deaf & Blind school in our community, resulting in a sizable group of deaf members of our church. We also teach ASL to our students in our Classical School as well. Since so many people that I love know sign, I felt it was about time I started learning myself.

I want to learn something new, I may not speak English in my country, but im excited to know that there may be an app where I can speak to deaf or mute people with sign language, because I'm simply curious how they see the world around us, I also love the fact that when I'll finally finish my learning, I'll be able to speak to people that I care about

it's radical, I want to be able to communicate with as many ppl I meet a possible-if I meet deaf or HOH or nonverbal people I don't want there to be a communication barrier, and I myself have trouble with speaking so learning ASL can help me communicate when I can't speak

my reason is completely selfish. I am losing my hearing. I spent the last few years being tested for the Coclear Implant. one thing doctors kept telling me was if I do not get hearing aids (which I do have) or the surgery I will develop dementia. I started asking other questions. Do deaf people have dementia? what is the ratio of deaf dementia patients to the hearing population? I learned that the ratio is close. so why aren’t there more deaf dementia people? ASL is a language and triggers the same spots in the brain as every other language. the loss of hearing is not a precursor to dementia but the loss of language is. I am picking up a new language to help me stay healthy. there are days when my hearing aid has not charged and I can still communicate with people. my family is picking it up too for days without batteries or mornings before I put my ears on. I can sign to the kids and get my idea across quietly and not have to yell in public. there’s so many benefits to this language. And I am very selfish.

Personally, I want to provide one more additional support for my students, as well as learning for myself. From childhood- late adolescence I used hearing aids, but for family religious reasons wasn't able to participate in ASL classes. As an adult I currently use hearing aids bilaterally, but I knew I lacked the strength in the area of ASL Sign Language communication and interpretation. I'm a, School Counselor/504 Coordinator & LPC-Intern, in Texas who's also DHH- hard of hearing bilaterally. I create accommodations and plans for students and interact with DHH students & families. I want learn with others to better understand and support others.

I don't think focusing on personal health, learning a new language, and having supportive family members learning a new communication system with you is selfish at all. It is productive, restorative, and healing. 👏👏👏
