I am learning ASL because my best friend is deaf and with people who do know ASL, she doesn’t have her hearing aids in, and I want to support her and become more close with her so that’s why I am learning ASL. Also, because I think it’s a fun way to connect to so many more people, cultures, and communities. Why are you?

I want to be a pediatric nurse, so I will probably at some point in my career come across a deaf child and want to be able to communicate with them so they feel safe and welcomed.

My daughter and I are learnjng because my son/her brother was born with mid-profound hearing loss. He used hearing aids until his hearing dropped significantly and then had cochlear implants, one side and then later the other side. The cochlears have been an absolute nightmare for him, they never stayed on correctly and later more issues. Since I unschooled both him and his sister we never got an opportunity to learn ASL. He reads lips, usually only mine though. But, with all of his implant troubles and now finding out recently he has lost all of his hearing completely, I figured it'd be good for me to learn and teach him.

i saw a it in a series and I thought it's a beautiful way to express yourself, so I started learning it, and I found out one of my friend is learning it to! it kept me motivated, we practiced it in classes, when we could't talk... we're no longer friends but I keep learning! It never hurts to learn, right?

I am learning so I can get the interpreter award in Scouts. Sign language has also always interested me ❤️

I have issues with self control so I say things I shouldn’t very often, I intend on going mute and communicating through asl

I want to be able to communicate with more people and not let a disability get in the way. It is also fun to sign and is good for expanding your brain.

My aunt's partner is deaf and so is my cousin so I'm learning asl to be a ble to communicate with them.
Hello, my name is Kris and as the title states I am soon to be deaf as I have some inner ear issues that will require having the middle ear bones removed from my right ear and my left ear is already mostly deaf. I'm really enjoying learning ASL so far and I'm looking forward to being able to still hold conversations with some even though I won't really be able to hear. I hope everybody had a good Christmas and wish everybody a happy new year!
Comment why you are doing ASL
At least where I live, ASL classes are very inaccessible. There should be classes inside public schools. It's kinda stupid how hard it is to learn ASL (at least where I live). Not only is it a language, it's a means of accessibility. Why should a language for the deaf be so inaccessible? And it doesn't help that some PAID classes are textbooks. TEXTBOOKS. The teacher barely even knows the language! Anyways I'm done ranting.
What's the reason that made you start learning sign language?
