I know you're supposed to get your sign name from a deaf person. My baby passed away at three months, and I hadn't gotten a chance to find the deaf community around me so she didn't get her name sign. I really would like for her to have a cool one. I want to be able to talk about her without finger spelling her name. I wasn't born deaf so I want to respect the culture. Does anyone know how I can get her name sign?
Her name is Jaden.

My condolences Terrin. Definitely sad to hear about Jaden’s passing. Getting assigned a sign name from the deaf community for someone they haven’t met will be challenging. I suggest you learn how to talk about and describe Jaden in ASL and simply ask someone in the deaf community to create a sign name for her. I’m sure sooner or later you’ll find someone who will. My heart goes out to you, and if I was a member of the deaf community capable of giving sign names I’d do it for you. 🙏So I’m praying others feel the same. Good Luck

Thank you for your response. She was a happy, curious, and calm. She loved music, being read to, baths, and her swing. She passed due to a heart problem. I'm learning ASL right now because I'm having some issues with my ears. I started learning it before she passed so I could communicate with her and now I'm learning for me in rememberance of her. I want to be able to communicate with the deaf community. They're awesome.

Your right, The few folks that I have interacted with from the deaf community have been awesome. The best thing is they are patient and slow down for me. I originally started learning ASL a few years ago because my grandson was born non verbal. But my desire to communicate nonverbaly has grown to extend beyond just him. I am not active in the deaf community but try to interact the best I can when I encounter another signer. Being hearing they are always appreciative that I’m learning. It’s rewarding in a way, because they don’t expect to meet signers who are hearing but not CODA’s. You see if you haven’t already. That’s a beautiful description of Jaden. I hope your ear issues get better and wishing you the best in your ASL journey.

Hello, my name is Kris and as the title states I am soon to be deaf as I have some inner ear issues that will require having the middle ear bones removed from my right ear and my left ear is already mostly deaf. I'm really enjoying learning ASL so far and I'm looking forward to being able to still hold conversations with some even though I won't really be able to hear. I hope everybody had a good Christmas and wish everybody a happy new year!
I am learning ASL because my best friend is deaf and with people who do know ASL, she doesn’t have her hearing aids in, and I want to support her and become more close with her so that’s why I am learning ASL. Also, because I think it’s a fun way to connect to so many more people, cultures, and communities. Why are you?

At least where I live, ASL classes are very inaccessible. There should be classes inside public schools. It's kinda stupid how hard it is to learn ASL (at least where I live). Not only is it a language, it's a means of accessibility. Why should a language for the deaf be so inaccessible? And it doesn't help that some PAID classes are textbooks. TEXTBOOKS. The teacher barely even knows the language! Anyways I'm done ranting.
